A volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami has caused untold devastation to the island nation of Tonga. Why am I concerned?

First of all, the loss of life and environmental consequences of this eruption are significant (we don’t know the full impacts yet). I wish the people of Tonga well and hope that they will get the help they need to recover.

The other key reason why I found this to be significant story is that it reminds me of the vast power of the Earth and how the environment may completely transform our lives in a moment and over time.

Most people are probably thinking about their stock, crypto, and real estate portfolios but maybe we should just take a moment to be grateful that the we are alive and that the Earth is such a wonderful place to be.
